The value of fresh durian imported by China has grown by an average of 26% annually over the past decade. about 300,000 hectares of durian are imported each year. Malaysia produces about 30 tonnes of durian a year, with the top-quality musang king accounting for 23%. But Malaysia ships just 17,000 tons of durian to China each year, just 5.8 percent of its annual production.
China officially approves the import of durian from Malaysia
In August last year, China and Malaysia signed an export agreement on frozen whole durian fruit, which is expected to soar from 5.8% to triple by the end of 2019.While China is showing huge demand for durian from Malaysia, the price won't push up as many farmers already plant durian and production is likely to increase, according to analysts. Malaysia also hopes to expand durian products, such as ice cream and biscuits, in an effort to attract more Chinese consumers.
While Malaysia's durian sales have been boosted by Chinese access, but which is a bad news for Thailand. In the past, Thailand was the main source of durian in China. In 2018, Thailand exported nearly 519,000 tons of durian, 60 percent of which went to China. But it has become harder for Thailand to export fruit after inspection standards for imported products were raised. Additionally, Malaysia is now primed for the Chinese market, and Thailand's export situation is expected to be more difficult in the future.
In 2018, china-malaysia trade reached 77.78 billion U.S. dollars. China remains Malaysia's most important trading partner and has invested in many infrastructure projects. On this basis, it is not surprising that Malaysia hopes to continue to expand its exports to China.
