軟玉是一種含鈣、鎂、鐵等微晶石的透閃石。其中各種礦物質(zhì)含量均勻的礦石叫做陽起石（柔滑的纖維狀礦物是構(gòu)成石棉的主要物質(zhì)）。鐵含量越豐富，玉的顏色就越綠。

從史前開始，軟玉和硬玉就被用來雕刻成裝飾品。硬玉和石英的硬度相當(dāng)。軟玉要柔軟一些，但卻比硬玉更加堅(jiān)硬。直到19世紀(jì)的時(shí)候，一位法國的礦石專家才將兩種不同的玉石區(qū)別開來。

Jade is an ornamental rock. The term jade is applied to two different metamorphic rocks that are made up of different silicate minerals:
Nephrite consists of a micro-crystalline interlocking fibrous matrix of the calcium, magnesium-iron rich amphibole mineral series tremolite(calcium-magnesium)-ferroactinolite (calcium-magnesium-iron). The middle member of this series with an intermediate composition is called actinolite (the silky fibrous mineral form is one form of asbestos). The higher the iron content the greener the color.
Jadeite is a sodium- and aluminium-rich pyroxene. The gem form of the mineral is a microcrystalline interlocking crystal matrix.
Nephrite and jadeite were used from prehistoric periods for hardstone carving. Jadeite has about the same hardness as quartz. Nephrite is slightly softer, but is tougher than jadeite. It was not until the 19th century that a French mineralogist determined that "jade" was in fact two different minerals.
Nephrite can be found in a creamy white form (known in China as "mutton fat" jade) as well as in a variety of green colors, wheras jadeite shows more color variations, including blue, lavender-mauve, pink, and emerald-green colors. Of the two, jadeite is rarer, documented in fewer than 12 places worldwide. Translucent emerald-green jadeite is the most prized variety, both historically and today. As "quetzal" jade, bright green jadeite from Guatemala was treasured by Mesoamerican cultures, and as "kingfisher" jade, vivid green rocks from Burma became the preferred stone of post-1800 Chinese imperial scholars and rulers.
